As the Moon, Earth, and Sun perform an orbital dance, the sunlit portion of the Moon moves in and out of our view, creating a series of predictable lunar phases. In any given month, we see eight different moon phases, depending on how much of the moon's disk is illuminated from our perspective, and whether the moon is getting closer or farther from full.
